Maternity Unit

The maternity unit comprises of maternity triage, midwife led unit, delivery suite, maternity ward and obstetric theatre suite. Please see individual sections for more information.

Location

  • Second floor, east wing, Russells Hall Hospital.

Visiting Times

Triage: 

  • 1 visitor/support partner only

Induction of labour: 

  • 1 birthing partner can stay at all times. 
  • Children of the parents who are admitted to the maternity unit: 3-5pm.
  • 2 additional visitors (additional to partner/children): 3pm-5pm
  • Conditions of staying overnight must be adhered to

Labour: 

  • 2 birthing partners

Maternity ward/ all other areas of maternity: 

  • 1 birth partner can stay at all times. Conditions of staying overnight must be adhered to.
  • Children/stepchildren of the parents who are admitted to the maternity unit: 12pm-8pm- children must not be left in the care of the person who is admitted at any time, a birth partner must supervise children at all times.
  • 2 additional visitors 12pm-8pm
  • Consideration must be taken of the space available at the bedside for the number of visitors at any one time. You may be asked to reduce the number of people present to avoid disruption to other patients.

No children under the age of 16 years (other than children/stepchildren of the individual admitted to the maternity unit).

It is not the responsibility of the security guard or maternity staff to arrange for visitors to swap.

Any special circumstances for visiting must be discussed with the lead midwife.

Please note that children visiting the unit must be respectful of the other new parents on the ward. We do not have any facilities to entertain children for long periods of time. Staff will ask you to take children off the unit if it is deemed clinically inappropriate for them to be present or if they are disturbing other patients.

In the event of an emergency all visitors may be asked to leave the maternity unit to allow treatment to be given and to keep access clear.

The maternity department cannot provide bedding or food/drinks for birth partners or visitors. Please ensure that you bring these with you.
