On Sunday 27th April, local man Adam Cotterill smashed the London Marathon by breaking the world record by running the fastest time in a mythical creature costume.

On the hottest day of the year so far, Adam ran 26.2 miles in a record time of 4 hours, 7 mins, beating the mythical creature costume world record by 20 minutes. Adam created the costume himself, building the internal structure, before adding a white sheet covering the frame and as well as a rainbow tail and a unicorn head; the whole costume covered Adam from his knees to the top of his head. This isn’t the first time Adam has competed in an outrageous costume; he previously ran as ginger spice from the Spice Girls for the Manchester Marathon.

Adam was proudly supported by his wife Louise, who is a midwife at the Trust, and his two daughters during the race.

Adam said, “The costume was difficult to run in and the heat was the hardest part, but I had good fun, and the crowd were amazing and spurred me on throughout the race. I also had the pleasure of starting the race with other runners in fancy dress attempting other world records.”

Adam has raised a staggering £4,040 for the baby bereavement unit in the maternity department at Russells Hall Hospital. The unit is a dedicated space that offers privacy, dignity, and compassion to families facing the unimaginable loss of a baby. They provide a calm and respectful environment where parents can spend precious time with their child, supported by trained professionals who offer emotional, psychological, and spiritual care during and after their loss.

Katie Philpott, matron, said “”We are incredibly proud of Adam’s amazing achievement in completing the London Marathon. His dedication and effort in raising vital funds for our Baby Bereavement Fund are truly inspiring. Knowing that his wife, Louise, a valued member of our midwifery team, sees firsthand the impact of this fund makes his contribution even more meaningful. These funds will make a real difference in supporting families during incredibly difficult times.”
