The Clinical Education Centre is the main facility for providing educational learning and meeting rooms for the Trust and offers a range of IT, audio visual and teaching equipment.

The majority of all teaching and learning takes place in this centre for the Trust along with specialised lectures, Trust events and specialist clinical courses and exams. The centre was formally opened by Professor Carol Black, President, Royal College of Physicians on 9th March 2004. Prior to the opening of the centre, educational resources were split across four hospital sites and very fragmented. The opening of the new centre saw a much needed bringing together of educational staff and resources into the one centre we have today.

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service, known as PALS, helps the NHS listen to patients, their relatives, carers and friends. We aim to answer questions and resolve concerns as quickly as possible.

We know it can be a worrying and confusing time when you or someone you know is unwell. If you have concerns about your care, you can speak to any member of staff caring for you. However, if they cannot help you or you do not feel comfortable talking to them, you can contact the PALS team.

PALS can:

  • Provide you with information about the hospital or the NHS and help you with any other health-related enquiry
  • Help resolve concerns or problems
  • Provide information about the NHS complaints procedure and how to get independent help if you decide you may want to make a complaint
  • Inform you about how you can get more involved in your own healthcare and the NHS locally

The Department of Plastic Surgery in Dudley is a National Centre for genito-urethral plastic surgery supported by a skin oncology service, breast reconstruction service, general plastic surgery services as well as a lower limb trauma service for the local population.

This is the only plastic surgery unit offering Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) for malignant melanoma within the Greater Midlands Cancer Network and West Midlands. We also support the general surgeons, vascular surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons in providing reconstructions involving the abdominal wall, limbs and chest.

Skin cancer

The plastic surgeons perform Rapid Access skin cancer clinics alongside the dermatology department for patients where there is a suspicion of skin cancer. We also offer a one stop same day biopsy service. Minor surgery is carried out at Corbett Hospital and Russells Hall Hospital and major surgery is carried out at Russells Hall Hospital.

We perform excisions of skin cancer as well as reconstruction. We also specialise in sentinel lymph node biopsy for malignant melanoma patients as well as lymph node clearance.

We have also collaboratively started a Mohs surgery service with the support of colleagues at New Cross Hospital for patients diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma requiring full excision and reconstruction.

Breast reconstruction service

We offer a wide range of procedures for reconstruction including micro vascular reconstruction using DIEP flaps, pedicle flap reconstruction using TRAM flap, latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction on its own or combined with implants as well as pure implant based reconstruction. We have been offering fat transfer procedure from the year 2001 for reconstruction of the breasts and correction of deformities of the breast as a primary or as an adjunct procedure. We offer unique two team approach for oncology resection performed by the breast cancer surgeon and reconstruction performed by the plastic and reconstructive surgeon.  We have regular multi disciplinary team meeting for reconstruction in decision making to help the patients, supported by a team of breast care nurses.

We are in the process of expanding a DIEP flap reconstruction service. We offer a medical tattooing service. We also help patients running support groups for breast reconstruction in the community.

Paediatric hypospadias
Hypospadias occurs in about 1 in 300 live male births and comprises a hooded foreskin, abnormal position of the hole at the end of the penis and sometimes a bend in the penis.  The aim of surgery is to restore the normal function and appearance of the penis.  It is usually carried out after the child’s first birthday and involves an overnight stay in hospital. The provision of this service means that patients from the Black Country, Shropshire and Worcestershire can be treated closer to home rather than having to travel into central Birmingham.
