The head and neck department has a dedicated ward and integrated outpatient department. There are dedicated head and neck specialist nurses providing high quality care, with a speech and language therapist devoted to the service.
The service has two sub-sections:
The ENT department provides a comprehensive ENT service including treatment for head and neck cancer, non-cancer surgery including thyroid and salivary gland surgery, voice and swallowing problems, diseases of the nose including endoscopic sinus surgery and functional surgery of the nose.
ENT works closely with a number of other disciplines. Particularly; maxillofacial surgeons, radiotherapists, oncologists and vascular and endocrine surgeons, orthodontists, respiratory physicians and ophthalmic surgeons.
There is also a dedicated children’s service.
Maxillofacial and oral surgery bridges the gap between dentistry and medicine.
The scope of this surgery is very broad and includes treatment of disease of the teeth, gums and jaws, the treatment of facial injury, the correction of jaw and dental deformities.
Maxillofacial surgeons are also involved in the management of oral and facial cancer including complex reconstruction. Salivary gland surgery and surgery for jaw joint disorders are also within the remit of the surgeons. The maxillofacial surgeons are also involved in the treatment of conditions not needing surgery; such as mouth and facial pain and those conditions either localised or generalised that affect the lining of the mouth.
