The Maxillofacial Outpatient Department consists of two speciality teams – Orthodontics and Oral Surgery (Maxillofacial).

The Orthodontic team is currently made up of one substantive consultant, one locum consultant and a specialist orthodontist. Supporting them we have two general dentists who specialise in orthodontics. All the team are appropriately qualified and registered with the Genral Dental Council.

Supporting the clinicians we have a team of five dental nurses.

The oral surgery team has one oral consultant, four staff grade doctors and a team of up to four dental core trainees’ (DCT)

The dental nurse team support both the orthodontic clinicians and the oral surgery clinicians.

Orthodontic Department

This department treats patients who have been referred into us by their general dentist, specialist practice or even other hospitals. These patients will have complicated dental issues such as jaw disproportion, severe tooth overcrowding, absent teeth and teeth that are buried in their jaw that their routine dentist or specialist dentists cannot treat and manage.

We also treat patients that have a combination of overcrowding and jaw relationship problems. These patients are seen on joint clinics by both the orthodontic team and the oral surgery team.

We have an onsite dental laboratory that construct our orthodontic appliances that are needed by our patients.

Oral Surgery

This department sees patients referred in by both the general dentist and sometimes their doctor. These referrals are for problems within the mouth including soft tissues issues and for problem teeth that may need extracting. Patients that may have a complicated medical history and taking certain medications are also seen in the department.

The department does not undertake routine dental treatment such as fillings, scale & polishes, and dentures.
