The Gynaecology Multidisciplinary Team

Patient Information Leaflet

What is a multidisciplinary team (MDT)?

A multidisciplinary team (MDT) is a group of doctors and other health professionals with expertise in a specific area, who meet to discuss the most appropriate care for individual patients.

Who are the members of the Gynaecology MDT at The Dudley Group NHS Foundation trust?

Consultant gynaecologist: a surgeon who specialises in treating problems of the female reproductive organs.

Clinical oncologist: a doctor who specialises in the treatment of cancer.

Radiologist: a doctor who specialises in using X-ray and other imaging scans to diagnose and manage illness.

Histopathologist: a specialist doctor who examines samples (biopsies) of body tissue under a microscope to aid diagnosis.

Gynaecology clinical nurse specialist: a registered nurse who specialises in gynaecological cancers, offers specialist advice and acts as a point of contact for you and your family.

MDT coordinator: a specialist administrator who ensures the meeting is run efficiently.

In addition, other nurse specialists, doctors and health professionals may attend the MDT meeting.

When and why does the MDT meet?

Our team meets every week on a Tuesday to discuss the most appropriate care for patients. This discussion is based on the information collected from the doctor’s examinations, biopsies, blood tests, scans and X-rays. We discuss all new patients and those patients whose condition has changed.

What should I expect?

After the MDT meeting, if your care has been discussed, someone from the team will contact you. This will be a phone call or letter. We may ask you to come for a hospital appointment. The consultant or clinical nurse specialist will discuss the recommended plan of care with you.

Throughout your care, we will agree treatment options with you. We will give you verbal and written information to support this.

Where can I get more information about the tests I am having?

As part of your care, you may be asked to have a test to give the

team more information, such as a scan or a biopsy.

Your doctor or nurse will discuss this with you and will cover the following information:

You will also be given a written information leaflet explaining the test. Please ask your doctor or nurse if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like another copy of the leaflet.

Can I have a permanent record of my consultation?

If you would like a permanent record of your consultation, for example a copy of the letters sent to your GP, please ask your hospital doctor or nurse.

At your hospital appointments, you may be given new information, so we recommend bringing a family member or friend with you to all your appointments.
