Robotic renal surgery team celebrates 300th procedure milestone at Russells Hall

A specialist surgical team at Russells Hall Hospital is celebrating a major milestone after completing its 300th robotic-assisted kidney procedure, helping patients across the Black Country access advanced treatment closer to home.

Since launching in 2023, The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust’s robotic renal surgery program has gone from strength to strength, bringing together cutting-edge technology and specialist surgical expertise to improve care for patients with kidney cancers and benign kidney conditions.

Using the advanced Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system, surgeons at Russells Hall can carry out complex procedures through small incisions with enhanced precision and control. The technology provides highly detailed three-dimensional views of the surgical area, and translates the surgeons hand movements in to precise movements of surgical instruments.

For patients, this minimally invasive robotic-assisted approach means shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries, helping patients return to their everyday lives sooner.

The service offers a range of complex kidney procedures including robotic partial nephrectomies, where only the affected part of the kidney is removed and radical nephrectomies where the whole kidney is removed. Surgeons also carry out procedures to remove both the kidney and ureter for certain cancers and reconstructive surgery to treat a congenital narrowing of the kidney's drainage system.

Russells Hall Hospital is currently the only centre in the West Midlands offering dedicated robotic-assisted renal surgery, with the da Vinci Xi system available three days a week.

Work is also underway to further centralise robotic-assisted surgery for both cancerous and benign kidney conditions. As part of this initiative, renal services from Sandwell & West Birmingham have already been centralised at Russells Hall Hospital, bringing specialist expertise and treatment together at one centre.

Mr Syed Shahzad, lead consultant for the robotic renal surgery program, said, “Reaching our 300th procedure is a fantastic milestone and reflects the dedication of our staff to improving patient outcomes through modern, minimally invasive surgery.

“Since launching three years ago, we have built a high-volume service, developed specialist expertise and created opportunities to train the next generation of robotic surgeons. This achievement is thanks to the commitment and collaboration of our excellent multidisciplinary team, whose contribution is vital to the success of the service.”

To make the process as straightforward as possible for patients and minimise unnecessary travel, the Trust is also working to provide pre-operative assessments at patients' local base hospitals, wherever possible.

The establishment of the robotic renal surgery program has played an important role in reducing waiting times for patients requiring robotic kidney surgery across the Black Country and beyond.

Diane Wake, Group Chief Executive of The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, said, “This is a fantastic achievement for our Trust and an example of how investment in technology, specialist expertise and teamwork can make a real difference to patient care.

“I am incredibly proud of everyone involved in reaching this milestone and of the work taking place with our partners to develop and expand specialist services for the communities we serve.”

With 300 procedures now completed the team are continuing to build on the program's achievements, developing its specialist surgical expertise, supporting the training of future surgeons and working with partners to improve access to high-quality urology services across the region.
