Overview of the area

Russells Hall Hospital is the headquarters of the Dudley, Wolverhampton and South- West Staffordshire Breast Screening Service which forms part of the National Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP).

The service comprises of three mobile screening units based at different community locations throughout the region. The service also has three static sites at Russell’s Hall Hospital, New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital.

Breast screening is a free service which involves a low dose x-ray, referred to as a mammogram, which takes images of each breast.  Screening aims to detect breast cancer at the earliest opportunity to maximise the success of treatment and reduce mortality from breast cancer. Overseen by the Service for Quality Assurance Standards and utilises modern technology for the best achievable outcome for the population we serve.

The service has an approximate population of 111,000 women who are invited to be screened every 3 years between the age of 50 up to their 71st birthday.  Women over the age of 70 can still receive a mammogram by making a self-referral to the service.

The Breast Screening Programme also manages the surveillance of women at very high risk of developing breast cancer.  Women who meet the very high-risk criteria will be referred to the breast screening service via the appropriate referrer.

1 in 7 women are diagnosed with breast cancer hence the importance for women to attend their mammogram appointment when invited.  Appointment dates and location can be changed by contacting the admin team via email or telephone – see contact details below.

The breast screening team is diverse, female led and promotes inclusivity and access for all.

More information can be found on our dedicated Breast Screening site.  A mammogram can also be viewed in multiple languages.

How to access the service

Eligible women registered with a GP practice will be invited once every 3 years for a mammogram by invitation only.  A woman’s first invite to the service will be between her 50th and 53rd birthday.  Should an individual experience any breast concerns at any time, they are advised to book an appointment with their GP who will determine whether a referral is required.
